“I broke my neck, was totally paralyzed from the neck down. I could have died during surgery or been quadriplegic or paraplegic. But everything was fine. It was amazing.”

I broke my neck. I was totally paralyzed from the neck down. I could’ve drowned because I was in the water face down. Just happened that I was swimming with my daughter’s boyfriend. He’s a Pittsburgh firefighter. He’d seen me in the water face down, came over, and rolled me. I let him know that I knew I broke my neck. He got me out of the water. I was life-flighted from Ocean City to Baltimore.

When I got there, the surgeon told me that there’s a good possibility that I could die during surgery. I could be quadriplegic or paraplegic. I went into surgery. Three days later, after the swelling went down, I got out of surgery and everything was fine. It was amazing. God wanted me to be around for some reason. I think, this is one of the reasons, working here at the church and other things that I do for society. It had an impact on my whole life going forward, because you never know. Accidents happen, and you don’t expect them to happen. I was 56 years old.
