“I realized the quality of life that I had: I was working a lot of overtime and not enjoying quality time with my family.”
Back when I was about 35, I was working for Westinghouse Electric Company as a financial analyst. It was a good job, I enjoyed it and stuff like that, but it wasn’t really my calling. I was coaching basketball at the time, too, for a high school, and I enjoyed working with the kids.
Things weren’t going so well at Westinghouse and there was going to be some downsizing. My wife and I worked it out and planned that I change my career. So, I went back to school in evenings. In 1991 I quit my job, got a Masters in education, and became a teacher. I’ve been working as a teacher for 26 years.
When I first went to school it was about doing well and reaching financial goals. Then I realized the quality of life that I had: I was working a lot of overtime and not enjoying quality time with my family. So, I’m grateful for the decision to become a teacher and the support I had.
